The Menace of Mob Justice
Recently, Global Dignity Forum has noticed an upsurge in mob justice in Ghana. This phenomenon is distinguished by the use of violence to resolve civil misunderstandings or to deal with suspected miscreants such as armed robbers, pick-pockets, rapists, and so on. This method of seeking justice is a significant affront to the rule of law and the administration of justice in the country.
Mob justice is a type of extrajudicial punishment or vengeance in which a suspect is often humiliated, assaulted, and, in many cases, killed by vigilantes or a crowd. Mob justice denies the suspect or accused a defence in a fair trial. Global Dignity Forum condemns all past and recent acts of violence in the pursuit of justice and equity.
Mob justice is a terrible form of injustice. It is a criminal offence punishable by law under the 1992 Constitution of Ghana. It violates all National and International Conventions that guarantee the right to life and equity for all people. According to article 3 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, “Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person”. Articles 5 and 6 underscore the significance of equity and fairness for all humans, as follows: “No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment. Everyone has the right to recognition everywhere as a person before the law.” Article 15 of 1992 Constitution of Ghana also states that the dignity of all persons shall be inviolable and that no one shall be subjected to torture or other cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment or punishment, or any other condition that detracts from human dignity. It also establishes an independent judiciary to ensure the administration of justice is equitable and fair.
Global Dignity Forum strongly advocates for the rule of law in all contexts. The rule of law refers to a condition in which all citizens follow the law and enable it to function properly. It emphasizes the supremacy of the justice system, the laws and the law courts, the judges, and attorneys, as well as the state's law enforcement agencies, in ensuring peace, stability, and socioeconomic development through fairness and respect for the rule of law. The efficacy of the rule of law is entirely based on the people's faith and confidence in the legitimacy of these institutions. As a result, every citizen, regardless of status, background, or political allegiance, is bound by the laws of the state. Under this regime, the law and its interpretation must be lawfully accepted as the authentic reflection of the sovereign will and the people's aspiration for democratic equity and fairness.

Interesting and educating
ReplyDeleteWe must all respect the laws of our country and we must support the Police and all other law enforcement officers carry out their duties effectively and efficiently. Must violence is injustice and must stop. We have a collective responsibility as citizens to ensure that our laws are respected at all times.
ReplyDeleteIt's time for all Ghanaians to say "No" to mob justice. The so called "Mob justice" is Not justice at all because the perpetrators clearly violate the rule of law and due process. There is no due diligence and sometimes innocent citizens loose theirs lives without any defence. The time to stop mob violence is now. Kudos to Global Dignity Forum ✊π½ππΎππ»
